According to a self-proclaimed Geek Dad out there, Math Drills Lite is a very effective app for practicing math drills. Although the interface does not have those pretty colours that we are so used to now and the input is quite calculator like, it does have a great ability to customize the program. This allows for specification for types of equations, variety, help sounds, colours and much more. Along with the game being easy to play and fun, it is also an app that does the best job of actually teaching math.
This app has both review and practice modes, with the majority of the teaching happening in the review mode. Help is available to the player as they are working through the questions which ensures they player knows what is expected of them. There are plenty of visual tools to help the player to know what is being asked of them. You can turn off the number lines, blocks, facts, etc if they are distracting or not useful for the player. If a question is missed it will later come back through the sequence of questions to ensure kids have the chance to understand what they got wrong and have another chance to answer the question. You are also able to customize the program in the settings of the game, which will allow you to remove certain questions from the mix that students have already mastered, and have other, more difficult questions come up more regularly.
The lite version of this game is free, however the games are limited and for the $1.99 there is a full version that offers much more for the player. Progress is tracked and areas of weakness are identified. This would be a very useful tool for both parents and teachers as it is able to monitor students with ease.
This app is available at Itunes.
